“We’ve been working with On Purpose Events since 2022 and not only have we found them to be incredibly professional to work with, but also a wonderful thought partner, particularly in the logistics and creative elements. From leading up to during the day of the event, they put a lot of thought into every single aspect of the event and have always been super flexible and understanding towards our event requirements (even when they were last minute!).”
Room to Read Australia’s annual Sydney Gala brings supporters together to fund children’s literacy and girls’ education, and plays a pivotal role in the organisation’s contribution to its programs overseas. Each year the gala spotlights a different region of Room to Read’s work. For our fifth consecutive year delivering the event, the challenge was to give returning guests a fresh reason to connect with the mission and give generously, all within a single evening for 160 guests at The Eveleigh. With a small team in Australia, Room to Read also needed a local partner who could carry the detail – developing the experience, coordinating venue and suppliers, managing volunteers and keeping the evening moving.

On Purpose Events developed and delivered THE ROOM: Where Every Corner Offers the Promise of a Better Future, a concept that made literacy part of the guest experience itself, from first interaction to final celebration. Guests used decoder cards to reveal obscured messages, a small, tangible sense of the barriers that learning to read can remove. Library cards then guided them to tables named after books Room to Read has published. The details gave donors something to discover and discuss together, keeping the cause at the centre of the room rather than in the background of it.

With a small Australian team, Room to Read relies on On Purpose Events to act as an extension of its own. Our team coordinated venue and AV requirements, entertainment, the auctioneer, photography, branding, décor, transport and event-day volunteers. Our team handled the practical work behind the scenes too, from receiving courier deliveries to printing signage and moving equipment, the kind of responsive, close-to-the-ground support that comes from being a genuine local partner rather than a once-a-year supplier.
A local children’s choir opened the evening. Giving opportunities ran before, during and after the gala, supported by digital auction activity and live updates in the room to keep momentum building. An African drumming troupe closed the program, turning the night’s final act into a genuine, uplifting dancefloor moment rather than a quiet send-off.

The gala brought approximately 160 supporters together, exceeded its fundraising target, and benefited 31,349 children through Room to Read’s literacy and education programs. The experience connected the joy of being in the room to the purpose behind it. Five years into the partnership, Room to Read’s team could spend the night engaged with its donors and supporters, knowing On Purpose Events was managing the production around them.
